CALL FOR SUMBMISSIONS: Mindful of Life in the City

The submissions window for StepAway Magazine’s ‘Mindful of Life in the City’ special issue is now open.

Walking through a city can be an exercise in mindfulness practice. Cities are full of people, buildings, automobiles and other factors that give life to them. The kaleidoscopic mélange (of colors, noises, and other activities) can be overstimulating and intoxicating at times. However, for the artist, the experience offers the opportunity to create introspective and meaningful art. In this issue of StepAway Magazine, we feature the works of writers and artists who translate life in cities in intentional and meaningful ways. They harness the energy of a city into art to express an experience unique to the practice of mindfulness.

This issue of the magazine is concerned with the filtering of life in a city as represented in the creation of art. For this process to be fruitful, the artist must be highly cognizant of the happenings around him or her without becoming entrapped or stymied by them. The artist captures or creates and then lets go so as to go through the process again and again without falling victim to it. This, in some ways, is what is meant by freedom. Cities remind us that life is not monolithic and can be far removed from the ordinary. The filtering of this experience—through the intentional and meaningful creation of art—is what concerns us in this rendition of the magazine.
