Heard in the Garden

City sounds radiate
(…cars passing
trains rumbling…)
over and through the garden
Situated between rail and road
the press of urban clamor is so aggressive
that I can hardly hear the gentle caress
of Life held within the soft whispers
of growing things
Their willing exchange
of human exhaled carbon
for life-sustaining oxygen
Their lifecycle, a gift of food
for us
for them
and for the soil
we’re both rooted in
and walk upon
Feet rejoice in hearing
its dark crumbliness
between their toes
