A River in Buenos Aires

The driving rain
pushes you further back
from the gutter
and you
begin to have a
relationship with
the people under
the same awning.

But hunger and
thirst and the
movement of the
night drive you on
to the thought that
it may continue
all night or
get stronger.

Rain slanting
that will be
at your back
like a runner
or athletic walker
leaning forward -
contemplate the other direction
farther from home.

Flowing it carries
an aerosol can
past the sewer
as it carries
my mind
and frees it – and
look there
is a current!
