election time again
i walked downtown
towards city hall
and passed by
cement suffragettes
four women stood
arm in arm
taking pictures
with the five replicas
while two men
held cameras and
directed the women
where to stand
to be best captured
in their eyes
no men were photographed
nor requested to be
women’s stuff
women’s things
i climbed the steps of city hall
thinking about the woman
i planned to vote for
wondering
if any man
has ever thought
a woman’s right to vote
was good for him too
